Literal to Living - Chapter 40: Jacob and His Family Settles in Goshen
In this chapter of Literal to Living, we walk through Genesis 46:31–47:12 and watch God strategically position Jacob’s family in Egypt. Joseph prepares his brothers for Pharaoh, Pharaoh responds exactly as God intends, and Israel is placed in Goshen — a location that protects their identity instead of pressuring them to lose it.
We look back at Genesis 43:32 to understand why Egyptians wouldn’t eat with Hebrews, and Genesis 46:34 to see why shepherds were considered detestable. These cultural boundaries weren’t accidents — God used them to keep His people distinct.
We also explore who lived around Jacob’s family in Canaan, who lived in Egypt at the time, and how human nature gravitates toward assimilation when surrounded by stronger cultures. Identity is fragile, and environment matters.
God doesn’t want us to lose the identity He gave us.
We are ambassadors for Jesus Christ, called to reach the lost — not become what we’re trying to save.
Principle: Don’t position yourself to lose your identity.
